- Over 1500 people have received their cochlear implant through SCIC
- adult program established in 1984
- children’s program established in 1987
- world’s first congenitally deaf child was implanted in 1987

- reimplantations currently 15 per year

- range of tests used to determine hearing loss
- 90% of children implanted under 2 years are integrated into regular school
- 93% of severe/profound congenitally deaf children in NSW are referred into the program
- mostly Nucleus cochlear implants are used, produced by the Australian Company, Cochlear Ltd. 3 Med-el cochlear implants have been used and 3 Clarion cochlear implants are maintained and supported through SCIC for overseas clients.
- protocols have been developed for various aetiologies
- seamless transition from childhood to adulthood
- strong involvement with Department of Education/ Early Intervention services and Australian Hearing
